A wildfire departure checklist should be short enough to use under pressure. It should also have a clear stopping rule: when officials direct you to leave, or conditions make departure urgent, leave without completing property chores or searching for possessions.

CAL FIRE emphasizes leaving promptly and not waiting for an order if you feel threatened. Local authorities determine routes and evacuation instructions for the actual incident. Use their guidance rather than assuming the direction that worked in a previous fire will be available again.

Write two levels of tasks

At the top, put the items needed to move people and animals: keys, essential medication or care equipment if safely accessible, ready bags and pet carriers. Assign responsibilities so two adults are not both collecting the same bag while an animal remains unaccounted for.

Below that, place optional pre-departure tasks that apply only when there is ample time and local guidance supports them. Avoid an ambitious list that makes someone reluctant to leave an “unfinished” house. Utility and property actions should follow local instructions and the household’s knowledge, not a generic nationwide checklist.

Make the route plan visible

Keep addresses and local evacuation information available offline. Identify more than one general route before fire season, but follow current closures and official directions during an incident. Do not rely on a phone app to choose a shortcut through an affected area.

Plan extra time for mobility needs, animal handling or transportation assistance. Test how bags and carriers fit in the vehicle on a normal day. If you do not have a vehicle, clarify available assistance well before a warning, including how requests are made and confirmed.

Keep the checklist near the things it describes

A plain page by the ready supplies is enough. Use large readable text and remove tasks that do not apply to the household. Add a brief note about any daily-use item that cannot stay packed.

Share the destination or current plan with the agreed contact when it is safe to do so. Once away, wait for official return guidance rather than going back to collect a forgotten item. Review the checklist after practice or a real departure and remove anything that created delay without helping people get safely away.
